FOLK ART CARVED CHEESE MOLD COLONIAL MAN RIDING A HORSE. Up for sale is this wonderful and well kept large hand carved oak wooden cheese mold or stamp.
What a great piece of Folk Art!! It appears to be a colonial man, perhaps even George Washington, riding on a horse. He appears to be in full military dress and perhaps this was used for some celebration or event? The detail is very good and there appear to be only a couple of places where there are very small issues. One of those is at the man's mouth, as it appears to be slightly chipped. There are very few issues with the carving on this mold. 11" in diameter x about 3" high. We don't know it's age or origin, but we've seen others that are from the 1800's that look very much like this. The mold has a metal band around the outside and wooden pegs were used in the construction of the mold.
On the back there are two large pieces of wood with metal bars between them, we anticipate these are the handles. This is truly a wonderful piece of hand carved 19th century?
